How pets enrich our lives
|Tips
Whether small or large… furry, feathered or scaly, pets play a significant role in our lives. More than mere domestic animals, these loyal companions provide a balance of physical well-being, emotional support and social interaction. But what are these benefits exactly?
The companion that makes a difference
Our love for pets isn’t new. Research by Swedish scientists, published in the journal Current Biology, suggests that dogs were first domesticated around 27,000 to 40,000 years ago! Over time, this friendship has grown, and animals have become a natural part of our lives.
Cats weren’t that far behind in joining the story of humans and animals living together. They were domesticated around 9,000 years ago, likely in the Middle East at the dawn of agriculture. Interestingly, we still don’t know who tamed whom – cats are so independent that they chose to remain near humans without becoming too reliant, which explains their sometimes aloof, “sovereign” attitude.
Even today, pets are still an important part of our daily lives, enriching us and making our lives better in so many ways.
Countering stress, depression and loneliness
According to psychologist Véronique Servais, pets are genuine sources of comfort and security for their owners. They can help reduce feelings of loneliness, ease anxiety and even alleviate depression. This is because animals live in the moment and express their needs right away. These personality traits encourage us to stop and focus on them when they need us. This pause, and being present in the moment, helps reduce our stress levels and brings us back to reality.
Portuguese veterinarian Marta Vieira also points out the benefits of showing love and attention to our pets. She says that something as simple as petting your dog or playing with them can release “feel-good” hormones like dopamine and serotonin, which help fight depression. With their constant energy and enthusiasm, dogs are always up for a walk or playtime, warming our hearts and getting us moving. It’s the icing on the cake!
As for cats, they have a special talent for calming us down with their purring. The gentle, steady vibrations have been shown to have a positive impact on our physical and mental well-being, reducing stress and even helping to lower blood pressure.
We should also remember that pets are important in fighting loneliness by being a constant presence in their owners’ lives. Plus, they often help their owners meet new people and form connections, whether it’s out on walks or at family gatherings.
Finally, if you’re going through a tough time (like a job change, relocation, breakup, loss, loneliness, etc.), remember that your pet – whatever it may be – is a precious partner, a loyal ally and a great confidant to help you overcome challenges and better handle your emotions.
Keeping you moving and motivated
In addition to their positive effects on mental health, pets, particularly dogs, play a significant role in improving physical health. Regular walks and play sessions encourage physical activity, promoting cardiovascular health, muscle strengthening and better mobility. Daily outings with your dog also provide opportunities to explore your neighbourhood and discover new areas of your city. It’s a win-win!

Animal-assisted therapy: A path to residents’ well-being
Did you know that Le Groupe Maurice also offers animal-assisted therapy in its care units, in addition to allowing small pets? This form of gentle medicine, based on specific interactions with familiar animals, offers numerous benefits to seniors, such as:
- Memory stimulation;
- Improved motor skills;
- Reduced stress and anxiety;
- Expression of feelings and emotions, both positive and negative.
Sessions are customized for each person and can be held in groups or one-on-one, with therapy dogs or other trained animals. The format varies depending on the residence and the individual’s level of autonomy.
In a world where it’s not always easy to find the right words or gestures, pets are a valuable treasure in our lives. With their keen sensitivity, they can pick up on our emotions without us having to say a thing, sensing sadness or stress in our behaviour and body language.
Our bond with pets goes beyond just showing affection; the mutual connection and unconditional love between a pet and its owner enrich and deepen both our lives and theirs.
With hearts overflowing with love and eyes shining with tenderness, pets become more than just faithful companions – they are lifelong friends who bring joy to our lives!
