Interview with Raphaël Bonneau, General Manager of Les Promenades du Parc

|Interview

Since early February, Raphaël Bonneau has been engaged as the General Manager of Les Promenades du Parc, in Longueuil. This interview reveals a devoted family man who is driven by a sincere and heartfelt ambition to positively impact the lives of those around him.

Raphaël, could you briefly tell us about your professional journey?

I spent the majority of my career in sales, primarily at Brault & Martineau. Over 18 years, I climbed several ranks: I started as a branch sales manager, then was promoted to general manager, followed by regional director, and finally, sales director for the entire Brault & Martineau and EconoMax network. That period of my life was incredible. I met extraordinary people, but one day, I felt the desire to contribute to society in a different way and take on a new challenge.

In 2019, I watched an interview with Mr. Maurice on RDI Économie. He was discussing the changes within his company with the host. He emphasized the importance of being there for the residents and touched on the topic of better-aging. I thought to myself, “This gentleman has more than just a job, he has a calling!” That sparked something within me, and I knew I wanted to join the Groupe Maurice team.

What motivated you to apply for the position at Promenades du Parc?

I had been trying to catch the attention of Le Groupe Maurice for some time (laughs). When I saw that the general manager position at Promenades du Parc was available, I didn’t hesitate for a moment. I’ve lived on the South Shore for 20 years, so it’s my community, my world, my reality. For me, it’s essential to understand everything surrounding the residence. Moreover, the location is absolutely stunning. I already see plenty of possibilities!

Moving from retail to the PSR sector is a big shift. How do you see yourself fitting in?

I think of myself as a connector, linking everyone’s strengths to make life better for our residents. I’m still learning the ropes, but I’m grateful that Le Groupe Maurice has surrounded me with an amazing support system. There are so many people here to help me succeed, which is wonderful.

I’m definitely taking the time to get settled into my new role. One thing’s for sure: I’m super curious. I ask tons of questions and take lots of notes. I’m really excited because I’m passionate about delivering great service to our residents. I’m driven to see projects through to the end, because at heart, I’m a team player who loves getting things done and moving forward.

What skills or experiences from your past can you leverage in this new role?

Throughout my career, I’ve learned the importance of listening and observing. In my opinion, it’s crucial to consider all aspects of a situation before making a decision. Taking the time to reflect allows you to structure your thoughts, prepare your explanations and communicate effectively. I place great emphasis on clear communication, ensuring that the messages I convey are straightforward and easy to understand. This also means being able to assume responsibility for and justify one’s decisions. I also believe in the value of organization.

A good plan doesn’t just save us time – it also leaves space for the unexpected. If someone needs me, I want to be able to make time for them. It’s the least I can do, and for me, it’s a matter of pride.

What gets you most excited about your new role?

I’m motivated by the prospect of helping our department heads and employees unlock their full potential. When everyone is inspired to push beyond their limits, amazing things can happen. And that means the residents will get to enjoy new and innovative experiences.

Raphaël, what are your greatest strengths and qualities?

I’ve been told I’m an organized, driven and creative person with strong integrity. I’m also known for being a good coach and mentor. Plus, I’m always open to new ideas and willing to lend a hand. If someone comes to me with an idea, we’ll work together to make it happen – even if it means pushing the boundaries and trying something new.

What do you hope to bring to Les Promenades du Parc, whether it’s for your team or the residents?

I’d love to see a sense of pride shine through even more. It’s already here, and I’ve seen glimpses of it. But I want our team members to become heroes in the eyes of the residents. I recently attended a conference by Kevin Brown, who said that heroes are people who choose to be extraordinary in their work and lives. I hope we can all aspire to be heroes. And I truly believe that Les Promenades du Parc has all the ingredients to build a strong, vibrant community.

And what’s your connection to older adults?

My maternal grandmother raised 12 children. She took care of everything! She was the heart, engine and guiding light of the family. When she passed away, my grandfather was left alone. Overnight, his rock was gone. He, who had always been lively and playful, began to decline. My vibrant and radiant grandfather became paler and paler.

At some point, he decided to move into a residence. The staff there treated him with exceptional care, and he regained his playful spirit and vitality. This new living arrangement greatly improved his quality of life and added years of happiness. I thought to myself, “If I can provide the residents of Les Promenades du Parc with the same experience my grandfather had, I will be truly proud”.

What message do you want to share with the residents of Les Promenades du Parc?

Don’t worry, you’re in good hands. We’ll keep working hard to take amazing care of you and make sure you have some incredible experiences. We promise!

Now, let’s get personal! Raphaël, what’s your go-to sport?

I’m a big basketball fan. My 11-year-old son is obsessed with the game, and he’s got me hooked too. Now I love it just as much as he does!

What’s the ultimate road trip song?

For me, it’s not just one song – it’s Pink Floyd all together! I love all their music. It’s perfect, and it always makes me want to rock out with some air guitar!

What always puts a big smile on your face?

It’s the conversations we have at dinner with the kids. It’s hilarious to see the different topics that come up with my little ones; from my 5-year-old bundle of energy to my 11-year-old son and 16-year-old daughter. Watching them interact is the best! Family dinner time is really special.

What’s your favourite food?

I’m a big meat lover. When there’s charcoal and grilled meat involved, I’m usually not far away (laughs). So, it’s no surprise that my favourite season is summer, with barbecues, pool time and socializing with friends.

Is there a quote that inspires you each day?

Rocky Balboa’s motivational speech to his son greatly inspires me. In essence, he says that life isn’t easy, but one must get back up and keep moving forward despite the challenges. This also touches on taking responsibility. These words are worth more than ten cups of coffee!

What motivates you to get up every morning?

It’s the desire to make every day count and to be a success!

Thanks Raphaël, for taking the time to chat with us. The staff and residents of Les Promenades du Parc are really lucky to have you on board. We wish you all the best on this new journey!
