Gustave Eiffel vient d'être fait Citoyen d'honneur des États-Unis pour son importante participation dans l'élaboration de la Statue de la Liberté. Son prochain projet s'annonce encore plus ambitieux : créer une tour de 300 mètres en prévision de l'Exposition universelle de Paris de 1889. Il peut compter sur l'aide de l'influent Antoine Restac, un vieil ami qui vient tout juste de resurgir dans son existence. Ce dernier est marié à Adrienne Bourgès, le grand amour de jeunesse de Gustave, qui a disparu sans laisser de traces 20 ans auparavant. Porté par le souffle de son ancienne flamme, le magicien du fer s'attaque à cette tâche qui s'annonce titanesque.
